Launched in June 2000, Women's eNews is a daily, online, nonprofit news service covering issues of particular concern to women. Women’s eNews also reaches a large audience in the Middle East through its Arabic sister site www.awomensenews.org. Women’s eNews relies on paid professional freelancers from all over the world to report and write their stories, and its coverage appeals to a broad spectrum of readers who care about women's well-being and participation in civil society.
Recently, Women’s eNews moved into an office directly across the street from the Susan B. Anthony-Elizabeth Cady Stanton corner, where they published their weekly “Revolution.” Inspired by this connection, a research project was launched—building on the work of Pam Elam, a feminist historian. Betsy Wade and James Boylan, collaborators and spouses, volunteered to do more research. The team quickly ascertained that no other book or project had focused on the role of women in the development of New York City and the founding principles of our nation. In successive eras of reform, women seeking justice, equality, amelioration of social ills – as well as an honest job – pursued their goals through activist journalism that centered in this district. Today, many of these women are recognized as pioneers of journalism, feminism and reform, and yet, are not well known.
Women's eNews gathered the team's research into a photocopied booklet and asked them to lead a walk for their 21 Leaders in May 2008. Along the way, such topics as women’s rights, suffrage, unions and socialism, racial equality, women’s working conditions, the foundations of faith, and immigrant communities were discussed and touched upon. The positive response encouraged the continued tour offerings during events held at Women eNews’ new space, as well as the modification of the informational booklet.
