The Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual (WATER), is a 501(c)3 feminist religious organization in Silver Spring, MD, which supports theological, ethical and ritual development by and for women. Founded in 1983, WATER fosters social and ecclesial systemic change by empowering women and girls locally, nationally and internationally. They work so that “justice will roll down like water.” WATER is an educational organization that works on feminist issues in religion through programs, projects and publications. It builds a network of feminist religious activists around the world through attention to religiously based social change.
The Sister Fund grant supported WATER’S feminist technical assistance work which includes:
1. Intergenerational Network of Feminists/Womanists in Religion: Builds a supportive network of women in religion across the generations for mutual empowerment.
2. Women Crossing Worlds: Sustains a south-north partnership between women and groups in the hemisphere. They plan at least one visit to Latin America in 2005.
3. Internships and Visiting Scholarships: Provides training and writing opportunities for women students and activists in religion. They plan to host 2 to 4 interns and 2 to 4 scholars.
4. Feminist Liberation Theologians’ Network (FLTN): Celebrates FLTN’s 10th anniversary in 2005 with a seminary on globalization and planning for the group’s expansion.
5. Promotion of A Guide for Women in Religion: Making Your Way from A to Z
6. Collaboration with groups that share their commitment to religiously informed social change: Increases and diversify their collaboration with other groups.
7. Feminist Scholarship: Produces materials that will promote faith-based social change.
