In 2002, Women in Media & News (WIMN) was founded by Jennifer Pozner with a diverse team of feminist, anti-racist, queer and media activists as directors and advisors. WIMN places media work at the center of its social justice efforts because it believes that media is the key to achieving lasting social change. At the heart of its vision is a more media-savvy women’s movement, one that will better articulate and advance a feminist social change agenda.
The Sister Fund grant was used to: 1. build upon past successes that empower community and campus women’s groups to voice their concerns via the media; 2. help journalists to create more accurate, diverse media content, raise public and activist awareness for the need of media reform; and 3. build bridges between the feminist and media democracy movements. WIMN serves as a catalyst for long-term change in the way women’s and other social justice communities understand and work with media. WIMN reforms media-makers with the ultimate purpose of increasing women’s voices and perspectives in the media itself while holding media policy and production accountable to women’s needs.
