viBe Theater Experience spring 2005
Amount Awarded: $5,000
for general support

Founded by Co-Directors Dana Edell and Chandra Thomas in 2002, viBe Theater Experience provides a safe, creative space for underserved young women to share their stories and use their voices to build and transform themselves and their community. viBe empowers teenage girls by encouraging them to create, publish and perform collaborative theater pieces that portray personal truth. viBe has produced spirited pieces such as "Women in the Making: Silicone NOT Included" and a series of solo performances simply entitled, "viBe Solos." The organization has been commissioned to present pieces by institutions such as the Institute for Collaborative Education, New Design High School, Culture Project’s Women Center Stage and Hostos Community College.

Theater has been used for hundreds of years as a medium to communicate ideas with the general public. It is an art form that influences the viewer with the vision of the creator.  Theater uses the performing arts to change both the young women involved and the viewing audience alike.  Dana Edell and Chandra Thomas have worked with the young women of East Harlem, primarily students at A. Philip Randolph High School. They determined that there was little access to creative outlets, leaving many of the young women susceptible to drugs, teen pregnancy, violence and abusive relationships. As experienced theater performers they knew how powerful and transformative the experience could be for the young women if they were given a chance to explore their inner voice. They knew that theater arts encourage trust-building, self-confidence and constructive risk-taking, which would ultimately lead to the discovery of inner strengths and self control from destructive behaviors. They echo the sentiments of former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, who said, “Young people who are involved in making something beautiful today, are less likely to turn to acts of violence and destruction tomorrow.” viBe Theater is not just a playhouse for young disempowered girls; it is a conduit for harnessing dormant creative energy and circumstance altering potential.
