Grants

Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Studies
Amount Awarded: $15,000
to sponsor two existing women Peacemakers to attend the 2005 retreat in New York and to launch the Women's Peace Initiative: Studies of Women Building Peace in the Middle East

Daily, we are bombarded with images that highlight how the misuse of religion leads to hatred and violence. But religion also inspires healing, peace and reconciliation. Unfortunately, this side of religion seldom makes the headlines. And when it does, it is usually men in positions of power who unfairly receive the credit. Religious women, even those who are peacemakers, actively promoting social justice at great risk to themselves, are rarely commended. The Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding is uniquely positioned to address this. Founded in 1992 and led by Dr. Georgette Bennett, the Tanenbaum Center is managed by women and advances a vision created by women.

The Sister Fund grant enabled the Tanenbaum Center to bring two women Peacemakers to New York City to attend a working retreat in September of this year and to launch the "Women’s Peace Initiative: Studies of Women Building Peace in the Middle East."
