The Muslim Women’s Institute for Research and Development (MWIRD) is a faith-based, multiservice, nonprofit organization committed to community and individual development. Organized with Islamic values as its foundation in 1997, MWIRD works to do the following:
• Organize and empower immigrant women (particularly Muslim women)
• Enhance and sustain disaster preparedness and relief in the urban environment
• Service the transitional needs of new immigrants
• Facilitate a greater role for women in the public discourse about Islam in the United States.
During the year of The Sister Fund grant, MWIRD sought to expand its efforts to work in collaboration with other direct service agencies that can respond to emergency food, housing, health and welfare needs of community residents. Accordingly, MWIRD has organized a network of volunteer organizations and agencies that are delivering services to Bronx Community Board 5 and beyond. MWIRD has been active on the issue of health care for the uninsured.
