Mary’s Pence was created by forward-thinking Catholics in 1987 who wanted to provide a fund for women starting innovative projects in their communities to address the roots of poverty. The fund exists specifically to provide support to women preparing for social ministry or working at projects of empowerment among economically disadvantaged women and children in the Americas. Mary’s Pence gives seed money to assist sustainable organizations, while also hoping this initial support will open the door to more traditional funding sources. The organization is based on the philosophy that empowering women in a community will lead to lasting systemic change and improved lives for everybody.
At the time The Sister Fund grant was given, the organization's former executive director had transitioned away from Mary's Pence after 7 years. The board at Mary Pence determined that this was an opportune time to undertake a strategic review to reflect on their experience over the past 20 years. A consultant was hired to assess their current situation and to map a course for the future, including clarifying and marketing its niche. Meanwhile, membership in the Women’s Funding Network provided the technical assistance needed to implement the recommendations.
