In 2002, Garrison Institute’s founders purchased and renovated a large former Capuchin monastery in Garrison, NY. Garrison Institute was founded on the belief that a great store of wisdom exists in contemplative and spiritual traditions that can help address and transform the complex challenges that the world faces. The Institute offers programs, conferences and retreats that bring together leaders from diverse spiritual traditions, social action initiatives, policy institutes and grassroots organizations. All of the Institute’s programs explore the intersection between contemplative and spiritual experience and engaged action in the world. The Institute’s program areas are: Education, Environment, Peace and Reconciliation; and Service in Society.

In November of 2004, the Institute held a meeting in The Sister Fund’s conference room for executive directors of local domestic violence shelters. The discussion was centered on the impact of working with the issue of domestic violence and the need for a safe/spiritual space for their staffs to renew themselves mentally, physically and emotionally. The program idea was met with enthusiasm. It represents a much-needed technique for their employees to learn about stress and trauma reduction. Suggested topics to be explored at the retreat include: conflict resolution among shelter residents, techniques for remaining calm during crisis, practices for remaining nonjudgmental and open in the face of differences with colleagues, and healthy methods of self-care.
