FaithTrust Institute was founded in 1977 to mobilize the religious community for active involvement in the prevention of sexual abuse and domestic violence. They have emerged as the only national, multifaith, feminist organization working with the religious community on these issues. FaithTrust Institute has been a leader in the field of addressing professional misconduct involving sexual abuse by clergy since 1983. Rev. Dr. Marie Fortune, founder and senior analyst of FaithTrust Institute, was the first person in the United States to explore the issue of sexual abuse by clergy by calling religious communities across the country to accountability. She is the author of the groundbreaking, Is Nothing Sacred? The Story of a Pastor, the Women He Sexually Abused, and the Congregation He Nearly Destroyed.
The Sister Fund grant went toward general operating support for its national work to prevent sexual and domestic violence and the development of a plan for weblogging on the FaithTrust Institute Web site.
