Founded in 1995, the Center for the Advancement of Women (CFAW) is an independent, nonprofit research and education institution promoting and protecting women’s rights and opportunities.
CFAW will now repeat their 1999 Women and Religion survey in order to gauge the modern-day impact of conservative religious groups’ recent targeted messaging and organizing among African-American and other minority religious groups—long the backbone of support for reproductive rights and social justice movements. In particular, right-wing political strategists and conservative religious groups—such as Promise Keepers and Focus on the Family—have been targeting African-American mega-churches, encouraging anti-choice and anti-women stances among them.
