Founded in 1983, Artmakers is an artist-run community mural organization that has a reputation for creating high quality community art to represent the people of the artists' neighborhoods. As co-founder Eva Cockroft put it, “Painted images cannot stop wars or win the struggle for justice, but they are not irrelevant. They fortify and enrich the spirit of those who are committed to the struggle and help to educate those who are unaware.” By creating public art with a social justice agenda, Artmakers gives voice to those who face a staggering amount of social opposition. Through public art, they have addressed social issues such as HIV/AIDS, drugs and violence against women. Over the years they have completed a wide range of highly publicized community mural projects including "The Struggle/ La Lucha Continua" (1985) "Push Crack Back" (1986) "Venceremos" (1991) and 2004’s "Things Fall Apart."
The Sister Fund grant supported a mural project called "When Women Pursue Justice." "When Women Pursue Justice" is a montage of images of women who have contributed to the struggle for women’s rights across the centuries. The project aims to educate, motivate and beautify the Bedford-Stuyvesant community of Brooklyn, NY.
