Grants

American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA)
Amount Awarded: $20,000
for support of the 2007 Women's Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (WISE) activities

The American Society for Muslim Advancement  (ASMA Society), a New York City based not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) founded in 1997, is an Islamic cultural and educational organization dedicated to fostering an American-Muslim identity and building bridges between American Muslims and the American public. ASMA Society’s philosophical objectives are to 1) strengthen a culturally American expression of Islam based on tolerance and on cultural and religious harmony, and 2) foster an environment in which Muslims can thrive.

WISE has had a positive reception from Muslim individuals, organizations and governments as well as from Western foundations and media.

The Sister Fund grant supported a two-day planning convening of 25 Muslim scholars to design the scope, mission, authority and vision of the first-ever Shura Council (an advisory council that interprets Islamic law for the political and religious leaders in its region of authority) to be comprised entirely of women.
