Founded in 1971, Las Hermanas is a national Latina organization that was instrumental in contributing to the development of mujerista theology, a theological school of thought that uses religious understandings and practices to provide a culturally appropriate context for Latina feminist hermeneutics. Influenced by the politics of mass protest at that time, primarily Chicana religious women mobilized to challenge the overt discrimination toward Latinos in the Catholic Church, and in the United States. By its third year, Puerto Rican and Cuban women living in the U.S. had joined Las Hermanas. A few years later, the organization was opened to lay Latina women and any women committed to the liberation of Latinas.
With a 30-year tradition of convening Latinas for a faith-based leadership program, Las Hermanas’ next Biennial National Conference, the 25th of its kind, took place in New York City from October 12-14 2007 with support from The Sister Fund.
