Mission and Purpose Statements The Sister Fund is a private foundation that supports and gives voice to women working for justice from a religious framework. We call these women the Healers of Our Time, because we believe that the healing work of progressive religious women plays a crucial role in the development of a society in which all people can be socially, economically, politically and spiritually empowered.
HerStory All living things must evolve if they are to endure. The Sister Fund's own continuing evolution, the natural development of its mission, its action and its role as a foundation, began a decade and a half ago. The foundation's inspired beginnings in 1993 were shaped by a diverse board of directors program, an eight-pronged funding strategy and a broad spectrum of woman-focused grantee partners working in the five boroughs of New York City and across the nation.
Letter from the Founder Welcome to The Sister Fund’s Web site. We are committed to lifting up the passionate voices of progressive women of faith and funding their visionary activism.
Farewell from the Executive Director Dear Friends,
Helen - Ten years ago, nearly to the day, God allowed our paths to cross in a most meaningful way. Kanyere was the Director of Social Services at The Riverside Church and I was looking for a women to fill the executive director position at The Sister Fund. At that time, The Sister Fund’s mission was shifting from the intersection of spirituality and social justice to a more explicit commitment to progressive religious faith and feminist activism. I began a search for an executive director who embodied and articulated these powerful elements. A professor at Union Seminary told me about Kanyere Eaton. When the two of us met, we were both clear some part of our journeys should be walked together in professional partnership.
